STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM education at DRSS looks creative and fun, something everyone would want to do. It feels challenging and unlike other schools is hand-on all the time. DRSS is a community and has their/our own way of doing things. We have hands-on experiments and rarely have textbooks. It is so interesting that I wish it was the way every school taught their kids. The 5 qualities are a big part of STEM education, we critique ourselves based on them and write Debriefing forms and Reflections based on them. If you got to one of them you may see some reflections and debriefing forms. The 5 Qualities are Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Inquiry, and Persistence. Here at DRSS I believe they emphasize the 5 Qualities because the 5 Qualities impact our future selves. You could base your whole life on them and a lot of your work would look professional, polished, and organized. It’s important for work to be like that and that’s why DRSS requires it. The 5 Qualities are important because they guide us along our projects and work and even quizzes and tests. We do a thing here called Project Based Learning (PBL). Instead of doing a new thing everyday, we learn through our projects. Most of the time, there is a project in every class and they are fun. At other schools, the teachers accompany you through your project and never take off the training wheels. It is normally very basic and limiting. We engineer our creative ideas and then share them with other schools and people.
